The update of the note to kids: Since I originally wrote this, I also found it possible to use a program called GPSout, http://www.schiratti.com/dowson.html, to operate some GPS receivers and programs with Flight Simulator. GPSout makes the flight simulator the position and speed that is output through the serial port of the computer running Flight Simulator. Thus, the computer running Flight Simulator mimics an external GPS. I found the hand of aviation Garmin and Lowrance emulators AirMap free running on a second computer work. Any program that uses a GPS external input should work. The new Lowrance Airmaps can work. I can get more information on Cockpit GPS can be downloaded from the home page for this, www.cockpitgps.com. 2/13/2006 Reality XP has updated its line to include Garmin CDI, 430, and the ability to cross the load between them. Since then I have upgraded my computer from the screenshot below and XP is actually very nice. Garmin and Apollo for Microsoft Flight Simulator XP actually makes it possible to have a full Garmin GNS 530, GL 430 or Apollo 50 in Microsoft Flight Simulator. Works well. If this sounds like a bit of a sales pitch – It is. Reality XP, www.reality xp.com, "I will try your program and I like 530XP. However, there is no quid pro quo. I think it's a good program and I want to see it succeed. So here's my quick review unsolicited. I am not an active flight simmer. I am an airline pilot with a book on the use of GPS in www.cockpitgps.com. My interest is to find a good tool for pilots learn to use GPS. When I was working on my Instrument Rating, many years ago, I've used previous versions of Flight Simulator is running on the Commodore 64 home and 12 Mhz extremely fast. PC at school. Even in these early versions, I found flight simulators to be a very useful training tool. GPS is extremely useful and in many ways easier to use. However, it is also very complicated. A VOR is a syndrome and a tuner. Compare this with the menus of many functions and data fields available in a GPS. The biggest weakness in the GPS is the responsibility of the pilot. Garmin offers an excellent free simulator for the GNS 400 and 500 series on their website at www.garmin.com. What the reality XP product is not of this free coach interface with Microsoft GPS Flight Simulator for the Garmin trainer can use within Flight Simulator. The Garmin simulator is excellent. When used with the Reality XP is even better. The only major problem I had with the operation of 530 XP is that the behavior of the main cursor control is a bit different from coach Garmin operate in stand-alone mode. In many respects, the behavior is an improvement, but is a bit confusing if you are used to Coach Garmin standalone application. Read the manual, but briefly: The knob is turned with left and right keys of the mouse. If you have a mouse wheel, it also will control the cursor. To activate the cursor, press the wheel. For the settings another mouse, read the manual. I have a core team that Flight Simulator only runs at 800 x 600 screen resolution. In this mode, the GNS 530 is disproportionately large panel blocks and other instruments necessary to fly the aircraft. Each view: the outside, the instrument panel, and GNS 530 runs in its own window. My trick is to maximize the GNS 530 so that the screen is more readable and reduce and move the instrument panel so you can see the main flight instruments. It seems strange, but works well. Why not use GPS for Microsoft? 2002 FS MS Flight Simulator 2002 includes a GPS, why would they want to spend the money to 530XP? The FS GPS in 2002 is not like any other I've seen on any aircraft. Worse, the simulation of GPS gets some important things wrong. Say you're flying a heading 180 and have a strong wind from 090. His direction, the direction in which points, is 180. Their track, the direction of travel on the ground, is actually to the southwest. The FS 2002 GPS reports a value for the track, but it's actually the title. There are some ramifications of this. Use of GPS should be able to fly directly to a waypoint spinning So the track that matches your bearings. If you try this at FS 2002, will fly a curved path. This is as a messenger with an automatic document feeder, but it should not be because the GPS must use the track while ADF uses the game. The GPS in the FS 2002 is flat out wrong. However, the reality XP does all this and behaves correctly. FS 2004 FS 2004 I bought because it included a Garmin GNS 500 and GPS 295. I will give partial credit to the fact that Microsoft fixed verses starting point track. The Microsoft implementation of the GNS 500 is a rudimentary simulation that mimics the style and some of the functions of the GNS 500. It's nice, but misses the mark significantly. The GPS 295 has Microsoft even less resemblance to the functionality of a Garmin GPS 295 reais. I will refer to the Microsoft implementation as MS 500. The MS 500 falls far short of being a true representation of the Garmin GNS 500. If you are a casual simmer and want to play with the GPS, the MS 500 is passable. However, if you want to learn how to use a GNS 500 for actual use or is a serious flight simmer, the MS 500 is not enough. I just played with the MS 500 enough to get a quick idea operation. This in no way intended to be a complete list of deficiencies, but only a couple of quick examples. In the GNS 500, there is a drop in almost all screens. In most MS 500 screens, pressing the MENU key will result in "all options." Some useful options include the ability to customize the GNS 500 for representations of airspace and warnings. Other options include the ability to change data fields that are displayed. Although the MS 500 offers warnings airspace and representation, it does not offer the ability to customize. To go directly to a point in the flight plan in the GNS 500, you can cursor to a point of reference in the flight plan and then select the hot key. You can also press the hot key and select a waypoint flight plan from the box on the menu FPL direct. If you press the hotkey again before pressing the ENTER key, then you will have the section from the reference point before the selected waypoint rather than from position Current. The MS 500 does not work something like this.
