How to centre a shape on Adobe Photoshop CS4?
I want to ensure a shape I have on one of my layers on Adobe Photoshop CS4 is exactly centred on the layer.
How do I do this?
Ensure snap to grid and smart guides are enabled (View – Snap & View Snap to)
Then enable rulers – View – Rulers.
Drag a vertical and horizontal ruler to the middle of the screen creating a crosshair effect (If you do this by eye then the rulers should snap to the middle exactly)
Then with your image drag it to where you think it is centred, Then press control + t or select Edit – Free Transform. You will see a central reference point in the middle. Use your cursor keys to move the central reference point to meet the middle of the crosshair’ed rulers which you previously dragged onto the project.
Another method is to find out the width of the picture by using the info panel (Window – Info) then subtract that width from overall width of your document. With the size you have left divide that by two. This is the ‘whitespace’ you should have on either size of the picture. Then draw two boxes with the shape tool, press ctrl+t on each of the boxes and set them to the number you got when you diveded the whitespace by two. Place the boxes on the left and right edges of the document. Then drag the picture inbetween the boxes. The boxes can then be deleted or hidden.
